I’ve always been interested in my ownhandwriting and how it’s changed as I’ve grown.

When I was in art school, I was a painter. For whatever reason, when I graduated I put down my paintbrush for a number of years. When I first moved to San Francisco, I was determined to find work using my hands. I was hopeful about piecing together a living doing inspiring and creative things. I didn’t know what that would look like until I was walking down a street in my neighborhood and saw some people installing a sign. I went up and asked them who painted it, and they said this great shop, New Bohemia Signs. I was super excited, so I holed myself up for the weekend and put together this really funny portfolio. It’s embarrassing to think about that work now.

My other work outside of sign paint-ing is as a gardener / farmer. I’m naturally drawn toward hands-on activities that are meditative, that I can be invested in and then have this amazing final product. I get in a similar headspace when I’m tending to the soil or focusing on making a letter look a certain way. I’m slowly, carefully doing something for a long time. What feels so nice is to focus on one small part, then step back and see the whole garden or finished sign.
